As semi-natural grassland has a high level of biological diversity, understanding the effects of grazing and its variation over time is important in order to identify sustainable grazing practices. We measured temporal variation in Orthoptera abundance and spatial vegetation structure during seasonal grazing in an extensive sheep-farming system. We studied five grazed pasture areas (pre-grazing and post-grazing) and two adjacent ungrazed grasslands. We recorded the total abundance of Orthoptera and described the vegetation structure of 175 replicate plots (25 per pasture/grassland) during six field sampling sessions. We demonstrated that the impact of grazing on Orthoptera abundance is species-specific and greatly varies over the grazing season. The decrease of phytovolume is significant after 4–7 weeks of sheep grazing. Total Orthoptera abundance was higher in pre-grazed plots than in ungrazed plots, and higher in ungrazed plots than in post-grazed plots. These differences were particularly high during the peak of adult abundance. No difference in species richness was observed between grazing intensities. Total Orthoptera abundance positively correlated to phytovolume only when grazing pressure was high. However, the relationship between abundance and phytovolume differed between species. Extensive grazing by sheep tends to homogenize spatial vegetation structure and to temporarily reduce total Orthoptera abundance at pasture scale. However, rotational grazing allows spatial and temporal heterogeneity in vegetation structure to be maintained at farm scale, heterogeneity that is beneficial for Orthoptera. In contrast, absence of grazing has a negative impact on Orthoptera abundance as it favours the accumulation of litter, which is detrimental for a high proportion of xerothermophilic Orthoptera associated with bare ground and short vegetation.  相似文献

The rise and expansion of Tibetan Empire in the 7th to 9th centuries AD affected the course of history across East Eurasia, but the genetic impact of Tibetans on surrounding populations remains undefined. We sequenced 60 genomes for four populations from Pakistan and Tajikistan to explore their demographic history. We showed that the genomes of Balti people from Baltistan comprised 22.6–26% Tibetan ancestry. We inferred a single admixture event and dated it to about 39–21 generations ago, a period that postdated the conquest of Baltistan by the ancient Tibetan Empire. The analyses of mitochondrial DNA, Y, and X chromosome data indicated that both ancient Tibetan males and females were involved in the male-biased dispersal. Given the fact that the Balti people adopted Tibetan language and culture in history, our study suggested the impact of Tibetan Empire on Baltistan involved dominant cultural and minor demic diffusion.  相似文献

A grazing experiment was conducted in the summer/autumn of 2003 to determine the effect of grazing on willow fodder blocks at 6000 stems/ha during mating, relative to control ewes grazed on drought pasture, upon ewe production and reproduction. The fodder blocks contained a mixture of herbage and small trees. Grazing occurred over 10 weeks, from 19 February including three cycles of mating, with four groups of 100 ewes, comprising short drought pasture typical of drought pasture, long drought pasture typical of the pasture growing in the willow fodder blocks, short drought pasture with restricted access to willow fodder blocks (restricted access) and full access to willow fodder blocks (fenced on the willow fodder blocks all the time; full access). After mating, the four groups were joined and managed as one group until weaning in late November 2003. Ewe live weight (LW) and body condition score (BCS) change and reproductive rate at foetal ultra-sound scanning, lambing, docking and weaning were measured. Ewe wool production and staple length were measured at weaning. Short drought pasture had a pre-grazing mass of 1639 kg dry matter (DM)/ha with a dead matter content of 60%; typical of drought conditions. Herbage in the willow fodder blocks was similar to both control drought pastures (short and long) in nutritive value, with an organic matter digestibility (OMD) of 0.50. Tree yields were low in the fodder blocks, but they had higher concentrations of all secondary compounds, including 30 g condensed tannin (CT)/kg DM and OMD was higher, at 0.72. CT concentration was higher in the fodder block herbage than in short and long control drought pasture (5.0 g/kg versus 2.5 g/kg DM). Substantial LW loss occurred in the short control group (101 g/day), and reproductive rate was low, as would occur in severe drought conditions. Full access to fodder blocks lowered LW loss to 40 g/day and increased reproductive rate by approximately 20% units, with more ewes giving birth to twin lambs. Restricted access ewes had a low reproductive rate, similar to the short control group. Reproductive rate in full access treatment was slightly higher than in the long control group, despite similar calculated DM intakes in both groups. Calculated crude protein and CT intakes were higher for full access ewes than for any other groups, due to contributions from both the herbage and the trees; this may have increased the flow of undegradable dietary protein (UDP) to the small intestine and so have contributed to the increased fecundity of this group. Full access to willow fodder blocks proved beneficial in increasing ewe reproductive rate. However, both pasture and trees need to be managed as a tree/pasture system in order to produce herbage of higher nutritive value and more efficiently utilise willow fodder blocks as a supplementary feed.  相似文献

Indian oil sardines (Sardinella longiceps) were collected throughout a full year, sun-dried and their chemical composition was determined to evaluate their value as protein supplement for Omani sheep. A feeding trial was carried out with 30 Omani intact male sheep divided randomly into four groups. They were individually fed one of four experimental diets containing 50 g/kg soybean meal as a major source of protein or 50, 100 or 200 g/kg dried sardines as a main protein source. Daily feed intakes and bi-weekly body weights (BW) were recorded. At the end of the 63-day trial, animals were slaughtered and their carcasses dissected. The dried sardines varied in body weight, body measurements, and dry matter content and chemical components throughout the year. On average they contained 450–720 g/kg CP, 40–260 g/kg EE and 110–210 g/kg ash. Inclusion of dry sardines as a major protein source (up to 200 g/kg) did not negatively affect the performance of Omani sheep in terms of body weight gain, feed conversion ratio or carcass composition. However, feeding sardines at 200 g/kg level significantly (P < 0.05) reduced feed intake as percentage of body weight. This study indicated that solar dried sardines might be used at levels up to 100 g/kg in diets of Omani sheep without compromising their feedlot performance.  相似文献

Helicanthes elasticus (Desv.) Danser is a common type of mistletoes of Indian origin. In Indian traditional and folklore medicines the plant is claimed to possess a range of medicinal values such as immunomodulator, anti-diabetic and anti-microbial properties. However, there is no experimental proof for its therapeutic claim. The aqueous and alcoholic extracts of H. elastica were evaluated for its immuno-modulatory effect on antibody formation against sheep red blood cells and on cell mediated immunity of immunological paw edema model. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts have shown dose dependent elevation in the antibody titer value in comparison to control group at 14th and 21st day of sensitization (**p < 0.01). There is a mild to moderate elevation were observed in the immunological paw edema at highest dose (400 mg/kg) during 21st day after sensitization. The histopathological observation shows that there is an increase in the white pulp of spleen and increased cellularity and formation of distinct germinal cells in lymph node. H. elasticus extracts possess marked antibody formation propensity without significant modification on cell mediated immunity.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of early lactation on leptin and growth hormone (GH) during bathyphase. Forty lactating Sarda ewes were divided into two equal groups on the basis of their milk production levels: HIGH (>1100 g/day) and LOW (<900 g/day). From the 5th to the 110th day after lambing, every 15 days, body condition score (BCS) was recorded and milk samples were collected. At the same data point, blood sampling was performed and leptin, GH and, Non-Esterified Fatty Acids (NEFA) were assessed. On milk, fat and proteins were determined. Statistical differences were observed in BCS, leptin, GH, NEFA and fat concentration in milk between the two groups. BCS was lower in high group and decreased from the 20th to the 90th day of lactation. Leptin was higher in low group and increased from the 50th and the 65th day of lactation, in low and high groups, respectively. GH and NEFA were higher in high group and decreased from the mild lactation. In high group, BCS and milk yield were negatively correlated and leptin was negatively correlated with GH and NEFA. In low group, leptin was positively correlated with BCS and negatively correlated with the all studied parameters. GH and NEFA were positively correlated with both groups. In conclusion, milk yield had an effect on the leptin and GH plasma values recorded during their bathyphase.  相似文献

Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite influencing behaviour of its hosts. The parasite is often present in sheep flocks without clinical symptoms. The order of moving to the milking parlour was reported to be non-random in domestic bovids. The aim of this study was to investigate if milking order is related to T. gondii infection in sheep. The study was performed on 41 ewes milked twice a day. Milking order was noted during 7 consecutive days. The indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) was used to detect antibodies (IgG + IgM) in sera of sheep. Titers ≥8 were considered positive. Moreover, in case of positive sera a test for IgM was conducted. The antibodies to T. gondii were found in 53.65% of the investigated sheep, but IgM were not found in any sheep. Infected sheep entered the milking parlour significantly later (mean position at milking 24.89) than uninfected animals (16.40; r = 0.43, p = 0.006). Results of this study suggest that behaviour of sheep is related to T. gondii infection. However, it is not clear if the phenomenon has any adaptive value for the parasite.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of activity, group size and sex composition on the cohesion of merino sheep (Ovis aries) groups. Mixed-sex (50% of each sex) and single-sex groups of 2, 4, 6 and 8 sheep were placed within 491-m2 arenas located in natural pastures and were video recorded during 6 daily hours. The behaviour, orientation and location of each sheep were then extracted from the films at 1-s intervals. We analysed the polarisation of individual orientations, mean inter-individual and nearest neighbours’ distances, as well as the frequency of pairs of nearest neighbours according to their sex within mixed-sex groups. Sheep were more aggregated than predicted under the null hypothesis of random spatial distribution for all group compositions and sizes. Sheep were more spread out and less aligned in half-active than in all-active groups, showing that social cohesion was reduced by a lack of activity synchronisation. The highest proximity between individuals was found in resting groups, yet alignment was low. The polarisation peaked in all-active groups. Mean inter-individual distance did not vary and the nearest neighbour distance decreased as group size increased. When sheep were all-active or all-resting, mixed-sex groups were more spread out than single-sex ones, with a greater distance between opposite than between same-sex individuals. Nearest neighbours of the same sex were also more frequent than random. Our results show that social cohesion can be modulated by activity synchrony but also by social affinity.  相似文献

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the ultrastructural characteristics and positions of granulated peripolar cells in newborn lamb kidney. Following tissue fixation by vascular perfusion in situ, the vascular pole region of the glomerulus was exposed for examination by scanning electron micoscopy following removal of the glomerular tuft. Peripolar cells were recognized by their surface morphology enabling their quantification and an assessment of the relationship of their position in the renal cortex. The prominent expression of peripolar cells in this species was confirmed. Almost every vascular pole examined revealed peripolar cells (405 out of 407; 99.5%) and thus, throughout the cortex, the distribution of peripolar cells was the same as the distribution of renal corpuscles. Larger, more protruding peripolar cells were observed in the outer cortical renal corpuscles. The numbers of peripolar cells encircling each vascular pole ranged from 1 to 10. There was no correlation between number of granulated peripolar cells at the vascular pole and the position of the renal corpuscle within the renal cortex. As viewed by transmission electron microscopy, organelles of protein synthesis were abundant in the cytoplasm of peripolar cells. Exocytosis of cytoplasmic granules was observed by both scanning and transmission electron microscopy implying that a process of regulative secretion occurs from these cells. The use of ultrastrural techniques has provided evidence supporting the concept that peripolar cells are prominent in the cuff region of each renal corpuscle of the newborn lamb and further-more that peripolar cells in this species most likely have a secretory function.  相似文献
